Days 22 & 23: Banámichi to Hermosillo

We left Banámichi late Monday morning. We had narrowed down to three options for our next destination – Hermosillo, San Carlos, or Yécora. The first choice came when we reached Mazocahui, and had to decide between Hermosillo/San Carlos and Moctezuma/Sahuaripe/Yécora. We still had some work to finish, SIM cards to buy, and with the previous day’s rain we were a bit worried about having to cross deep “vados” (arroyos), so we headed toward Hermosillo/San Carlos.

Reaching Hermosillo around 2.5 hours later, we came to the realization that while San Carlos is supposed to be beautiful, it is also located by the beach and was even hotter than Hermosillo, which was already at 35 °C. We decided against proceeding towards the hotter city and stopped in the “cooler” one.

We stayed at the Hotel Premier, which cost us around 550 pesos (~40 CAD) for a nice, clean, and well-equipped room with a secure parking space for the bike. We had a delicious dinner of Mexican food at the hotel’s restaurant in the evening and then retired to our room for some remote work.

Hermosillo is a pretty big city with a population of almost 800,000. It has all the modern amenities a visitor could hope for and is quite peaceful despite its size. Phil even managed to find a Starbucks the next day! 🙂

If there’s a Starbucks in town, Phil will find it

The next day was a hot day so after an early afternoon break at Starbucks, we escaped to the Galerías Mall for a few hours. While there, we stopped at AT&T where two friendly associates, Hector and Noé, set us up with new SIM cards and pre-paid plans so that we are not always completely reliant on Wi-Fi to stay connected, in case we stop at a place where the option is not available.

We were back at our hotel before dark and had dinner at the restaurant again in the evening before retiring to our room to plan for the next days.
