Day 25: Yécora to Basaseachic Falls to Creel

We were up bright and early on Wednesday morning. After cold showers (no hot water for the morning) and some coffee at a nearby Oxxo (Mexican convenience store chain, similar to 7-11 in North America), we were on the road at around 8:30 AM. The drive from Yécora to Basaseachi was incredible. The weather was finally nice and comfortable, the road was in excellent condition, and the views we encountered were absolutely stunning.

We passed by valleys of lush green vegetation and rocky hills that would serve as the perfect habitat for hobbits, unicorns, fairies, and all the other magical creatures that live in Maleficent’s forest kingdom. This was not the Mexico that people often talk about. It is unfortunate that there weren’t any shoulders along the road where we could safely stop and take pictures, and we didn’t get the GoPro going either (facepalm).

Road to Basaseachic Falls

It had started raining a bit when we got to the Basaseachic Falls. After paying the entry fee of 120 pesos (~8.50 CAD) for the two of us, we entered the park, parked the bike, and took a 15-minute hike to one of the viewpoints. Despite the rain, we enjoyed the views and shot some videos so keep an eye on our YouTube channel for those.

After a quick lunch of tacos at a small restaurant near the entrance, we were on our way to Creel. Not long into our ride, it started raining heavily. All the potholes we started coming across and the curvy roads made for some stressful riding. We were extremely grateful for our awesome rain gear, waterproof duffel bags, laptop bags, and money belts or we and all we had would have been soaked otherwise.

By the time we reached Creel, we were cold and tired, and decided to break our budget by opting to stay at the Best Western PLUS. When we got to the hotel, we were greeted by a warm and cozy atmosphere, and a friendly face behind the counter. We didn’t get the name of the gentleman, but he saw our weariness and disheveled appearances, and suggested some spa services that we were more than happy to indulge in.

We checked in, took our showers, and then Phil got a well-deserved massage and I got a much-needed facial. After being restored to humans, we headed to the restaurant for some wine and delicious pizzas out of a wood fire oven. While our room cost us around 2300 pesos (~163 CAD), each of the spa services and our dinner were far below the price points we are accustomed to back home so we tried not to feel guilty about it 🙂

Needless to say, we had a good night’s sleep after the wonderful end to a tiring day.
