Days 133 – 139: Mérida to Cancún and a Week in Mexico’s Ultimate Beach City

On Sunday, we rode for a little over three hours from Mérida to Cancún where we rented an apartment for a week at 5,900 MXN (~397 CAD). With its palm tree-lined streets, pristine white beaches, and turquoise-blue waters, it is easy to see why so many people visit this beautiful beach city. Last year alone, the region saw 10 million tourists! I was surprised to learn; however, that aside from beaches, spas, and shopping, there is not much else to see or do in Cancún. I guess people who visit beach cities are not exactly looking for much else? Beach city people, feel free to enlighten us.

Most of our day on Wednesday was spent riding around and exploring the city. We stopped at the Playa Delfines beach and shot some pictures and videos. We had another scare with the drone when Phil was bringing it back from flying it over the ocean. I was in the process of taking pictures when I heard an “oh shit!” from Phil. Next thing I knew, he handed me the controller and took off towards the beach like he was being chased by Wile E. Coyote. Turns out, the drone had lost connection and had taken a nosedive. Thankfully, it had made it to the shore so it fell in sand.

After a therapeutic lunch at a Chili’s in one of Cancún’s fancy-pants malls, we headed back to our apartment with the intention of returning to Playa Delfines on Saturday with our bathing suits and spending the whole day doing nothing. Of course, since there is an evil weather witch who hates me because she thinks I stepped on her kitten’s tail (I swear I didn’t – I love kittens), the heat and humidity of Cancún gave way to copious amounts of rain for most of the day on Saturday so we ended up spending most of the day indoors and watching A Bad Mom’s Christmas at the cinema in the evening.
